==== Appraisal ==== When evaluating the extent, capacity and likely geometry of a recently discovered reservoir a more detailed stratigraphic understanding is necessary. By taking a “pragmatic approach” to using fossils as biostratigraphic markers, it is possible to “see in between” the standard global markers and biozones which may not have enough stratigraphic resolution for our purposes. Such local markers may not have an appreciable lateral extent to, say, the regional or even basinal level, but they may be sufficient within the immediate area of our field. The exercise that accompanies this part of the course demonstrates such an example where biostratigraphic intervention resulted in a re-appraisal of a reservoir’s likely extent and its geometric nature, which in turn has a direct bearing on future production drilling planning.
