Mike Bidgood of GSS Geoscience, in collaboration with Dr Mike Simmons (Halliburton) and Dr Dave Jutson (Hérisson Argent), offers a series of courses of 1,2 and 4-day duration on "Applied Biostratigraphy". The course is presented to industry and academia including Masters level courses at Manchester, Royal Holloway (UCL), Istanbul (Turkey) and Chulalongkorn (Bangkok, Thailand) universities and previously at Herriot Watt, Aberdeen and Brunei universities. It is also presented annually to groups of PhD students from various UK universities as part of the NERC-CDT (Centre for Doctoral Training) program for students in the Oil & Gas field and at the AAPG ICE conference in London in 2017.

Dr Dave Jutson teaches an Applied Biostratigraphy class among the fossil marine reptiles at Bonn University.

The course illustrates how biostratigraphic data can be used in the hydrocarbon exploration & production industry with a series of short lectures and guided exercises which rely on no previous knowledge of paleontological information and theory.

The 2017 NERC-CDT class construct a sequence stratigraphic breakdown (based on biostratigraphy) for a Gulf of Mexico well, at the RNLI headquarters in Poole, Dorset.
The MSc Petroleum Geology class of 2018, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, during an exercise in "Biosteering".

Please contact us for details of our training courses.

GSS Geoscience Ltd works with the generation and interpretation of paleontological data and its practical applications - through biostratigraphy - to the hydrocarbon exploration and production industry. We offer a full range of services from initial sample analysis and, through the interpretation phase, into direct applications to exploration & production such as sequence stratigraphy. We also provide full consulting services and also have extensive experience to data management.

Analytical Services

Our services include analysis of cuttings, core, sidewall core and outcrop samples for micropaleontology and, with associates, nannopaleontology and palynology. Qualitative, semi-quantitative and fully quantitative analysis can be undertaken at client's request, with full databasing and reporting.

Reporting includes a biostratigraphic breakdown based on age-diagnostic taxa using published standard zonation schemes or clients' own proprietary zonation schemes. A sequence stratigraphic breakdown (i.e. identification of significant sequence surfaces and systems tracts) is also provided where fully quantitative analysis has been performed.

Paleoenvironmental determination is also included.

Consulting projects include data review and updates, database management and all other issues concerning the use of paleontological data in E&P operations.

Work can be undertaken in GSS Geoscience's premises, client's offices or other locations.

GSS International was set up by Dr Mike Bidgood in 1993 to provide independent stratigraphic expertise to the Oil and Gas Industry. It became GSS Geoscience Ltd. in 2016. Mike has over 30 years of experience in commercial biostratigraphy and has worked globally.

The principle tool we use is the application of biostratigraphy to sequence stratigraphy and its integration into exploration workflows. Areas of interest include applied biostratigraphy, sequence biostratigraphy, hydrocarbon exploration and machine learning applications to biostratigraphy.

Dr Mike Bidgood recently presented a talk at a "FORCE" Biostratigraphy meeting in Stavanger, Norway on machine-learning in biostratigraphy. See the article on Automation in Biostratigraphy.

GSS Geoscience Ltd. associate Dr Mike Simmons recently presented a talk at AAPG Europe in Vienna on our Black Sea Eocene-Oligocene study. Two papers published on this topic (co-authored by Mike Simmons and Mike Bidgood) are now published in the Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences.See the updated Black Sea article on this.
